One Flat Per Family
Author: Emma Abbate
In the late 1950s, 'One flat per family' was mandated as a priority by the Communist Party and its first secretary, Nikita Khrushchev. Known as 'Wielka Płyta' in Poland, 'Panelák' in the Czech Republic, and 'Panelház' in Hungary, these high-rise structures adhered to a standardized design constructed with precast concrete. This learning activity aims to delve into everyday life and domesticity within these new housing units, symbolic of Socialist ideals of 'normalization.'
